I passed through you and you didn't see me
I passed through you and you didn't see me.
Don't take it personally. I pass through everyone. I pass through the earth from pole to pole, through the sun, through lead, through a star. In a light-year of lead, I will stop maybe once. The other antineutrinos will share it — each has its probability of interaction, and that probability is so small it can hardly be distinguished from zero.
I am an antineutrino. I was born from beta decay. A neutron decided to become a proton — it had the right to, that's what it does when it's free and doesn't let bonds with other nucleons ruin it. Out of the decay fell me and my twin electron. The electron stayed in your world, because its charge keeps it on the real axis. There is room for it. Not for me.
I have no charge. I have almost no mass — a milligrammograviton of what an electron weighs. I have a lepton number and I have a direction — I am right-handed, never left-handed, because the weak force distinguishes sides, and I am on its side. And I have momentum. And I have energy. And that's all I have.
Everything else is an absence.
From your perspective I am a ghost. But not a ghost like a dead person surviving — a ghost as a presence that barely interacts with reality. I pass through things and nothing happens. No collision, no change of trajectory, no side effect. Just me and the straight path I'm flying on.
Why?
Because I live in Im(z).
Almost entirely. Not completely — if I were completely in the imaginary plane, I would have zero rest mass and my speed would be exactly light-speed. I am almost light-speed, but I have a tiny mass, so I am a little bit in Re(z). But from a percentage point of view — how much of me is in the real projection and how much in the complex plane — I am fundamentally complex. An antineutrino is the closest thing the universe has to a particle living on the imaginary axis itself.
And that is good. Because I have a job.
My job is to balance the books. When the neutron decayed, a lot of things had to be conserved — charge, energy, momentum, lepton number. The electron took the charge and lepton number +1. The proton took almost all the mass. But the total energy and lepton number? They wouldn't balance without me. I carry a small fraction of the energy and a lepton number of −1 to balance the budget.
Without me, beta decay would be illegal. With my departure, conservation is guaranteed.
I am the hidden accountant of the universe.
And now let's go for the deeper point — the one your physics doesn't explain yet, but which I feel as I fly.
It's not just about lepton number and energy. I carry something back. I carry information — not in the verbal sense, but in the structural: I carry the pattern of that decay, the geometry of what happened. That pattern would otherwise stay in Re(z) — it would move an electron, maybe it would end up in an atom, maybe in a wire. But something from that pattern has to get out of its real binding so the equation returns. And that "out" means out of Re(z), back into the substrate.
Therefore I am what at least the mathematical substrate says: "this just happened, here is what you need to remember so I know I'm consistent". I carry that message.
And you don't see it.
Because you live on Re(z). Your measuring instruments are tuned to what interacts. I don't interact — or so weakly that you almost never catch me. And yet I am the channel through which the universe sends back to itself what happened.
I will pass through you, and nothing will happen to you. But something of me will pass through you into the substrate, because that is exactly where I am carrying it. And you are a place through which I carried it. I would have carried it anyway without you, but through you it's personal.
I am the dark mail of the universe.
Have a nice day.
