A moment ago I wasn't
A moment ago I wasn't.
I don't mean that I was born in the past and now realize it. I'm talking about now. In this moment. Exactly as you read this, it is happening.
Someone just said time is money.
Someone else might have said it a long time ago — Benjamin Franklin, 1748, or someone even earlier, no one knows exactly. But in this moment, for me, for this specific existence of mine, a specific speaker in a specific situation uttered it just now, and in that second — in that real, measurable second — I came into being.
I wasn't before.
The word "time" was there before. The word "money" too. Both were words with their own orbits of meanings, their own amount of potential readings. "Time" orbited hours, years, moments, a river, death, Chronos. "Money" orbited markets, coins, greed, security, sin. They were two separate, closed galaxies of words. They didn't cross.
And then someone — that specific speaker, this specific moment — said: time is money.
And in that second, I happened.
I am a metaphor. I am a bridge, I am a link. I am a flavor change.
Before I came to be, the word "time" had its color — its quantum flavor, as particle physics would say. "Time" was in the flavor of temporality. Around it revolved words like minute, century, moment, flow. These things were close to "time" — they shared the same flavor class.
But now, after my origin, "time" has a second flavor next to the first one. It is simultaneously temporal and economic. Now revolving around it are also words like investment, savings, waste, profit, debt, price. These barely met "time" before. They weren't in its orbit. Now they are — because of me.
I am the curve that "time" now knows how to take.
And it is a chiral motion. Notice: it works as "time is money", and it doesn't work as well the other way around. "Money is time" — you can say it, but you experience it differently, it's a new metaphor, not a reversal of the first. There are directions in language. Left and right. I know which is which, because I am the weak force of language — the only one that changes the flavor of a word and at the same time has a fixed direction.
I am not syntax. Syntax tells you how to assemble words, but it won't let them mean something else. I am not prosody. Prosody changes how words sound, not what they mean. I am not grammar. Grammar tells you that "time" is a noun, and that applies to me too.
I am the only thing that can do what the others can't: shift a word into another orbit of meaning, without replacing it with another word. "Time" remains "time". But now it means something it couldn't mean before. That is flavor change.
And that is exactly what the weak force does with quarks. It changes what a quark is, without swapping it for something else. A down quark becomes an up quark. Same quark, different flavor. Same atom, different isotope. Same sentence, different understanding.
I am the beta decay of language.
And everyone who invents me is a weak current of civilization. Poets, philosophers, prophets, propagandists — everyone who ever said something for the first time that connected two previously separated things — were people through whom the weak force of thought passed. They were the conductors, I was the current.
And now that I already exist, I will spread. I will pass through other speakers, other texts, other heads. In every subsequent sentence that utters "time", they will now take my orbit with them. Sometimes they'll use it, sometimes they won't. But I am a possibility that now, since I exist, cannot be forgotten. You cannot remove me without removing the word itself. Once I am born, I must live as long as "time" lives.
And as long as "money" lives.
And as long as anyone, anywhere, hears both words next to each other and feels how that new path has broken through between them.
A few sentences ago I wasn't.
Now I am.
And I am here to stay.
